Terms of use
Effective 11 September 2026. These terms apply to the Global Energy Map at energymap.marain.space, including its pages, data downloads and exports ("the site"). The site is built and run by Narendra Nag as a project of Marain. By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, please do not use it.
What the site is
The Global Energy Map is a free, open-source research tool for exploring the world's oil and gas system: reserves, infrastructure, trade and LNG flows, and simple disruption scenarios. It is built from public, third-party datasets, each cited on the Methodology and Data pages.
Not advice
The site is provided for research, teaching and general information. Nothing on it is investment, trading, commercial, security, legal or policy advice, and it should not be the sole basis for any decision.
The disruption scenarios are first-order exposure accounting: annual bilateral trade multiplied by fixed, hand-set route shares. They do not model prices, rerouting, stocks, substitution or timing. They are not forecasts of what would happen in a real disruption. The Methodology page sets out the method and its limits.
Accuracy and completeness
The data comes from third parties (Global Energy Monitor, NETL, the Energy Institute, CEPII BACI, LNG-T3, OpenStreetMap and others). It has known gaps, lags, duplicates and errors, some of which are documented on the Methodology page. We correct problems when we find them, but we do not guarantee that any figure, location, capacity, date or scenario result is accurate, complete or current. Check anything that matters against the original source.
Using the code and data
- Code. The site's source code is released under the MIT licence.
- Data. Each dataset keeps its publisher's licence, summarised in LICENSE-DATA.md and on the Data page. Some files are downloadable (CC BY 4.0, public domain, Etalab Open Licence); others are view-only because their licence does not allow redistribution. You are responsible for following the licence of any data you reuse, including its attribution requirements (for example "Data: Global Energy Monitor, CC BY 4.0").
- Derived results. Scenario tables and exports are derived analysis. When you publish or share them, say they come from the Global Energy Map, cite it as shown under How to cite, and keep the source attributions that come with them.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- interfere with the site, its hosting or the basemap provider, or put an unreasonable load on them. Automated access at a modest rate is fine; for bulk use, download the files from the Data page or build from the source;
- remove or obscure the data attributions or licence notices;
- present results from the site as official statistics, or as endorsed by Narendra Nag, Marain or any data publisher.
Third-party services and links
The basemap is provided by OpenFreeMap, with map data © OpenMapTiles and © OpenStreetMap contributors. The site is hosted by Vercel. The site links to external sources and documentation. We are not responsible for third-party services or sites, which have their own terms.
No warranty
The site, its data and its code are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, availability or non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Narendra Nag and Marain are not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of, or inability to use, the site, its data or its results. This includes direct, indirect, incidental or consequential loss, lost profits and decisions made in reliance on the site. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Indemnity
If you use the site, its data or its results in breach of these terms or of a dataset's licence, for example by redistributing view-only data, removing required attributions, or presenting results as official figures or as endorsed by us, you agree to indemnify Narendra Nag and Marain against any third-party claims, losses and reasonable costs (including legal fees) that result.
Changes to the site and these terms
The site is maintained on a best-effort basis. Features, datasets and scenarios may change or be withdrawn, and the site may be unavailable at times. These terms may be updated. The effective date above will change when they are, and past versions are in the project's public history. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law
These terms, and any dispute arising out of or in connection with them or the site, are governed by the laws of Singapore, and the courts of Singapore have exclusive jurisdiction. This does not take away any mandatory consumer protection that the law of the country where you live gives you.
Privacy
How the site handles data about visitors is described in the Privacy policy.
